SoCal Cyclocross Cup Race #10

State Championships, ADT/Home Depot Center
Cyclocross returned to the classic Cal State Dominguez Hills race course after a long hiatus and the building of the new ADT/Home Depot Center which now houses the Home Depot Soccer Stadium and the ADT Event Center – home to a brand new, world class indoor track cycling venue. Along with it came what is becoming a trend in sunny Southern California… cold, wet weather conditions. The State Championship CX course wound its way around the ADT Center where world-class track cyclists were practicing inside for an international event the following weekend. And despite the construction, the once opening fields with classic hill run ups in the dirt and grass somehow managed to resurface with a flair of its own.
So Cal Racers braved the cold, rainy and muddy conditions to take titles in Junior, Senior and Masters categories. The race format different than the previous weeks, grouped categories together in three waves. Masters and Women, Juniors, then Senior Men which combined A/B/C category racers. This made the Senior Men’s field the highlight on the 1.2 mile course, with racers everywhere!

SoCal Cyclocross Cup Race #9

Turkey Trot Cross – Glendale, CA – 11/28/04
The 1st ever cyclocross race in Glendale, CA made headline news! After another cold-spell reaching low-40 degree temperatures, rain dropping locally and snow in the local mountains the night before, breezy, So Cal Cross racers were welcomed by brisk air and sunshine Sunday morning. Over 100 competitors from across So Cal made the trek to Verdugo Park and were treated to not only to a classic course, but also to free breakfast courtesy of Egg Beaters and Detroit Coffee!
The course touted by many as the best of the series-to-date was 1.2 miles in length, started and finished on a paved straight-away then onto the grass, twisting through trees, rolling up and down stream banks, courtesy of custom-made bridges built by organizers, Bicycle John’s Serious Cycling and PAA/Merrill Lynch who co-promoted the event. Spectators lined around the course, many of whom had never seen a cyclocross race before! The triple barrier uphill section and steep hill run up were by bar, the crowd favorites.
A record number of C men lined the course with TTCX Sponsor, Lee Bird (PAA/Merrill Lynch) taking the victory in his first cross race! Ryan Morgan of the Amgen Junior Squad continues to lead the series with his 4th victory of the season. In the Killer B’s… the battle for first continues as Paul Welsh of Celo Pacific chases down Jason Vorell (Encore Credit) who now only leads by 6 points. Emilio Cervantes (Raleigh) on the prowl in the 35+ race overcame series leader Chris Gallup (Celo Pacific) on the last lap for the win. In the As… Dorothy Wong (Kelly Bike Co.), also co-promoter of the event, while chasing down the Killer B’s, won her 8th race of the series. And making another So Cal appearance Brent Prenzlow (Celo Pacific) took the victory in the men’s A event overtaking a fast-charging Perry Paolini (Amgen). Brent moves up to 3rd in the series with Perry only 2 points behind! Race results can be found on: www.paacycling.org and www.seriouscycling.org .
