BikeTalk #9

Bicycle Recycle Project @ Seven Hills Elementary School

Join us and our in studio guest Steve Davis, founder of the Bicycle Recycle Project at Seven Hills School here in Nevada City CA, while we talk about his very special and unique program in which he shares his knowledge of bicycle mechanics as an actual classroom curriculum.

In short, Bicycle Recycle Project receives unwanted, or discarded bikes for anyone in the local community who wishes to donate. From that point the students completely refurbish the bike and make it 100% serviceable. The bikes are then donated to a needy cause like less fortunate families at Christmas time or the "Loaves and Fishes Day" event, where they donate the bikes to homeless and needy people in the Sacramento area.

Steve founded his now thriving program with his own money several years ago, and has nurtured and watched it grow into a highly regarded program amongst the students at Seven Hills Elementary, as well as the community, and anyone who receives these fine labors of love.

Go to bicyclerecycleproject.com for more info.

Suzanne Weber will be with us live in the studio. Suzanne is an active Yoga instructor that practices locally in the Nevada City area. BikeTalk #5

December 17, 2008

Tune in for the next edition of BikeTalk when we continue our discussion about " body language " and a few other surprise topics.

Our in studio guest will be local icon and industry veteran/Guru, Don Drageset who will take us on a stroll (or rather "a coast") down memory lane and talk about the changes he has seen on the Nevada County roadways from the time he began riding his bike here back in the early 80's, till now. He'll also share his experiences of what is was like growing up as a third generation owner of a bike shop his grandfather began in 1909 in Pasadena California.

To many in the local cycling community Don has been a fixture for some time since his days as a partner at Tour of Nevada City Bike Shop from 1986-1996, and as a behind the scenes mentor, friend, mechanic, and avid cyclist to anyone who walked through the door. At the ripe age of 68 Don continues to spread his wealth of knowledge and friendship to anyone he encounters and continues to ride his bike on the Nevada County roadways.

LETS TALK BIKES!

BikeTalk #3 podcast

Join us on Wednesday, September 17th @ 1pm and my in-studio guests Janelle Black and Kurt Stockton when we discuss the two most important things that connect you and your bike to the earth - your tires!

The main topic:

  • How you can tell if the tires that are on your bike need replacing or not
  • Why it's not a good reason to skimp when it comes to choosing new tires.
  • What is a good tire choice for the types of roads you ride
  • What's the correct tire pressure
  • Schrader valves and Presta valves
  • Fixing flats (getting good at it)
  • Avoiding obstacles on the road or trail that can cause flats

See: Michelin tire service and care tips

A topic that goes hand in hand with the above is: "how do I go about getting that dusty old bike back in service" and, "how to do it safely without breaking your pocket book"?

On those tow topics we will discuss several rules of thumb on how to:

  • Wipe off the dust and make a check list of "what needs to happen"
  • Basic visual checklist of things that need to be done
  • Tire inspection (of course)
  • Washing your bike -- whats a good product to use?
  • Chain and derailleur inspection
  • Setting the wheel back into the bike and properly tightening it
  • Quick releases
  • Truing the wheels
  • Replacing seized up cables
  • Basic tolls that you will need

And ongoing topic that will begin on this edition of BikeTalk will be:

  • The basic anatomy and proper names of a bicycle and its parts.
